It is no secret that mobile technology has rapidly proliferated throughout youth culture and permeates society at all levels. When technological development increases to such an extent that human communication has been significantly altered, it is common for many to be reactive rather than to accept this inevitable evolution wholeheartedly. Youth use their own version of language to express themselves in a culturally modern manner; it is a way to feel comfortable with each other, to build communities and friend groups, and to bring down barriers of fear and anxiety that other forms of communication might instill. Most students recognize the difference between text language and formal language, as is evidenced by the majority of college students easily transitioning into writing in a formal manner.

As was previously stated, many other sectors of society have embraced text culture in a positive manner. For example, in the medical field, there have been movements to provide information about disease management, appointment reminders, and other sensitive information though text messaging. This has proven particularly effective with otherwise difficult to reach populations; for example youth who are unwilling to seek help for an issue that has been stigmatized such as depression or sexually transmitted disease. Text messaging offers a certain amount of anonymity and has the effect of increase the comfort level of younger patients. This same rationale is easily transferrable to education systems; utilizing SMS for schools can go a long way to reaching all students and maintaining a consistent and instantaneous connection to their education.

Providing a link between socialization via text and educational goals via text, makes it so all students can integrate the learning process more comfortably into their daily lives. Having teachers and parents acknowledge the legitimacy of a form of communication that is so ubiquitous in their lives will also go a long way to providing a more understanding and effective learning environment. Seeing SMS for schools as a benefit and not a detriment will take time, but hopefully the education system will not be left behind when the tide of technology continues to change.
